“The greatest truth is that there is no one truth, no one way to live. Each of us must make our own way, and that is what makes us human.”
“I have always believed that hope is what makes us human. It keeps us going even in the face of the hardest challenges.”
“In the end, the greatest joy comes from being yourself, no matter where you come from or where you’re going.”
“We are defined not by our failures but by how we rise from them.”
I first wanted to read Barack Obama’s book The Audacity of Hope. The title itself caught my attention,it made me think of someone brave enough to hope and dream big. But while searching for it, I found another of his books, Dreams from My Father. Since it was also written by Obama, I decided to read this one first. I’m happy I did, because this book feels very personal and real.
This book is about Obama’s life story before he became President. He writes about his childhood in Hawaii and Indonesia. He discusses his student life and his work in Chicago as a community organizer. But more than events, this book is about his search for who he really is.
The book is not written like a leader’s speech. It feels like a young man trying to understand his place in the world. Obama shares how it felt to grow up with a Kenyan father and a white American mother. He often felt caught between two worlds and struggled to belong fully to either one.
The most touching part is when he travels to Kenya to meet his father’s side of the family. Through them, he learns more about his roots and also more about himself.
Through this book, I learned below key lessons:
1. Identity is something we keep discovering.
2. Family shapes us, even if we don’t grow up with them.
3. To belong, we must accept all parts of who we are.
4. Big dreams start when we know ourselves better.
5. Real hope grows from truth.
I began my reading journey looking for The Audacity of Hope. But starting with Dreams from My Father was the right choice. This book is heartfelt, personal, and very relatable. If you want to know the real human being behind Barack Obama, this is the book to read.
Now, when I finally pick up The Audacity of Hope, I’ll read it with more understanding. I understand more about the man who wrote it.
