“Grief is a creature that feeds on pain and swallows the good memories—until all you’re left with is the bad ones.”
“Faith was like a warm coat we put on in the morning, even when the buttons didn’t fit anymore.”
The discomfort of evening is the debut novel by Dutch writer Marieke Lucas Rijneveld, won the international booker prize 2020.
As the title suggests it has all the capability to move your mind in the direction of discomfort. Salute to Author’s bold and unapologetic dark writing.I usually avoid reading books which can bring sad and gloomier feelings in me. I would have never touched this book if it wouldn’t have been the winner of international booker prize,2020.
It is the story of ten year old Jas who resides in a very closed Reformist community which uses biblical passages and a sinister merciless God whose authority guides the family’s life. However, when her older brother is killed in an ice skating accident which tears household’s world apart. Parents severely withdraw into their own world, no one articulates their heartache and the children grapple with grief and loss of religious faith. It is definitely unpleasant and disturbing to read and should come up with the warning. The Author has done amazing job in her bold writing.
